Focus

It's often a good thing when you have coworkers who are eager to help out. Eager to learn.

As it makes it easier to get things done, to finish tasks, to have an extra pair of hands.

But at the same time...we sometimes have coworkers who are....well too energetic?

Like they're an eager puppy ready to jump to the aid of whoever needs help...but like they have a two minute attention span and if they're easily distracted by the next 'shiny' new thing they see.

Which is what happened tonight.

I had a coworker who had a couple of hours to help us out and I directed them to help us with a particular pallet in petcare.

As we have inventory later this week and we have to work a truck and get it all out onto the floor before said inventory happens.

And the pallet was huge. Like taller than I was.

And I set my coworker to go get as much of it done as they could before they had to be elsewhere in the store.

Only....it seemed like every two minutes...I would catch the coworker elsewhere.

Namely, in the petcare department.

Which yes, it's easy to get distracted there as we're constantly doing things, talking to customers, catching animals, etc.

And this coworker is so very eager to help out in petcare. Wanting to catch fish and bag crickets and do water tests and such and basically stick next to my petcare associate like a shadow and follow them wherever they went to see what they were doing to learn from them.

*exhales*

It got frustrating. To constantly have to be like "Hey, we really need you working on this pallet. Can you go back to the pallet, we need help with stocking." Like FOCUS person FOCUS.

In the end I think they only managed to get like...a third of it done? Maybe half? I'm not sure how tall the pallet was to begin with.

But it was still pretty huge when said coworker had to go do their other responsiblities in the store.

Leaving me with a half worked pallet...that needed to be finished before we left for the day. *exhales*

I ended up putting away almost everything else on it by myself.

Not surprisingly I was much quicker at it than my coworker even with the constant calls up to the register and around the store to go help other customers.

And by the end of the day I just had the 'overstock' stuff. Product that wouldn't fit on the shelves, that needed to be placed in our midsteel.

And like...I was proud that I managed to get it basically all done before we left.

But it still left me irritated that I ended up having to finish the pallet in the first place as my coworker should have been able to have done a lot more than they did if they hadn't been so focused on getting distracted by what was happening in petcare.

*exhales*

At least the stuff got done.

But yah...gonna have to figure out a better way to get this coworker to focus on the job at hand...

Facing

It's amazing how many customers struggle with the simple concept of "put it back where you found it."

I had to face my department moreso than usual today because we were doing inventory tonight and we needed all our product to be in the proper locations.

Which meant constantly walking along the aisles making sure that everything was in it's spot and was neatly lined up.

And it was frustrating because I could literally get done with a section and come back to it five minutes later and find half a dozen things were now out of line or put in the wrong spot.

It really felt like if a customer even glanced in the direction of the aisle that things would get messed up.

But seriously.

How hard is to put things back where you found them?

I watched people dither over items.

Trying to decide between one style and the next.

And then whatever choice they made...they'd leave the other  options scattered about.

Or else would push other product to the side to make room for them to lay their choices down on the shelf so they could better 'see' them....

Seriously.

It was frustrating.

So frustrating.

No wonder I don't like facing until after we close.

It's like a never ending task otherwise.

Do You Have?

Gotta love it when people expect us to have more product in the back when they can't find what they want on the shelves.
Which I suppose it's a good assumption to have.
As it's well known that stores have receiving areas where extra product is stored.
So I can understand why people ask if we have any more of an 'item' when they can't find it.

But unfortunately for them. With the pandemic going on.
It's not quite the case.
As there have been breakdowns in the supply chain.
So we aren't getting in certain products in at all. Or the ones we are getting in are in very limited quantity to the point where we can put all of said product out on the floor right away.

And it doesn't really help at all that customers are wanting to buy a lot more than usual.
With the addition of the nearby colleges/universities starting up school again, there's been an influx of students wanting to buy a pet to keep while they're here.

Which since most apartments don't allow pets of the furry variety.
It means a ton of people have come into the store wanting to buy a pet fish.

Which means.
Yep.
We're running super low on our small fish tanks currently.
Like entire shelves are empty.
Which is only something I really see occur occasionally around Christmas.
But with our next truck not expected until Wednesday...

I can only imagine our fish tank shelves getting emptier.
And I'll have more people asking if we have more tanks in the back.

So yah....
Gonna be fun dealing with the next round of having to say 'we're out' with customers.
As I'm already telling that about bird cages as we have none.
And with a nationwide circket shortage happening I have to tell people we're out of crickets.
So now I get to add small fish tanks to the list of 'we don't have more in the back'

*shakes head*
So crazy.

Stocking

It's always weird to be working on a Sunday.
As I rarely need to do so.
But today I was brought in to work a morning shift to help my stocking manager reset a bunch of our endcaps in the store.
Because every month we have to switch which product is placed on the shelves at the end of each aisle.
To you know...catch people's attention and promote differing products.

It wasn't as hard as doing stocking tasks the day before.
But resetting product can be tiring in it's own right.

But rewarding too.
To walk pass a endcap and know that you did all the work to make it look pretty and such.

Still.
Tiring.
Very tiring.

At least i didn't have to deal with too many customers in the meantime.
Which is gratifying.
I don't like trying to complete tasks when I keep getting interrupted by people needing things.

*exhales* It's gonna be a long week...

The Same Old Sale

 *Exhales*
Once again.
We have the same stupid fish sale in the store.
I say stupid.
Because it's been the same fish on sale for A YEAR NOW.

Like seriously.
I don't know what happened to the guy in charge of creating sales.
But they've severely slacked off when it comes to 'good' fish sales in the store.
Like after A YEAR you think that they would switch it up and put some different fish on sale.

But noooooooo.

Once again.
It's same old same old. *exhales*

Which is frustrating.
Because like, I want to buy fish on sale.
And the fish that are always on sale are ones I can't have in my tank. XP Bleh.

In any case.
I actually was ahead enough in opening that I joined in in putting up the 'new' sale prices as our previous sale ended the day before.

Honestly, some months i wonder why they even bothered.
LIke they should have just said that the sale extends until December at this point.
because we keep taking down and putting up the exact same product sales.
The only difference is sometimes the price but mostly it's just the 'expiration' date on the sale.

*exhales*

So tired of this.
Wish they would do something different.

Nets?

So for a little while now, we've been really low on fishnets in our fish aisle.
Which is weird, because like...I would have expected them to restock those.

Only I hadn't thought much about it until a customer came up asking if I had any smaller nets.
So I double checked the section...and nope still empty.

But then I had a thought...
What if they were in the overstock?

As with the reset that had happened in the store last week...came also a new set up for the shelves above the product, where the name cards hide the shelf above.
So if things are smaller...they tend to be hidden from view because they wouldn't poke up and over the new sign tags.

I ended up grabbing a step ladder real quick to check and make sure no nets were hiding up there....

And what do you know?

I found at least four different varieties of nets, including the smaller size the customer was looking for.

*shakes head*

Note to self.

Check the overstock section a little more carefully from here on out.

Right There In Front Of You

I had a customer call today to see if we had a certain filter in stock. Our Fluval FX6.
Which when I went to look on the shelf, I didn't see one, but I knew there were overstock filters on the steel nearby, so I went to double check there and found the FX6 that the customer wanted.

Which they then requested that I put it on hold for them as they would be in within the next couple of hours to get it.

So I grabbed a ladder and got the box down.
Took it over to the registers where both the cashier and the manager saw me with the box....

But apparently they didn't see where I put it down.
The last the cashier saw of it, I'd had it by register two as I was grabbing some receipt tape to write the customer's name on it so people would know the filter was on hold.

And promptly forgot about it.

Until the cashier was like. "Sarnic, where is that filter you grabbed down?"

As they obviously didn't see that I put it on the floor in front of the cabinet that holds all the online orders that are waiting for people to come pick up.

So I was like "To your right, by the cabinet."

As the Cashier was facing register 2 and the cabinet was to the right of them.

What did my cashier do?

Turned to their LEFT and started walking towards me.
Like no. Dude. NO "It's behind you now." I said.

And the cashier is like "It's gone! Did someone go put it back?!"

So I went up to them. Looked them in the eyes. Pointed behind them and said. "You mean that filter there?"

*shakes head*

Yah. Dude was like.

oh.

Yah.

Maybe try looking harder than the foot radius around the registers next time?

*shakes head*

But honestly.

I don't get why people do that.
I tell them that something is to their right.

And then they turn to the left.

Like. Guys.
Did you learn the difference between right and left?
Because it seems like you didn't with how often the mistake is made.

Frustrated

It's frustrating when I'm not able to help customers out.

I had two such encounters today.

One was with a grandmother aged lady.
Who had a puppy she was trying to find a doggy gate or pen for to a) keep the puppy confined to certain areas of the house and b) prevent the puppy from getting into the front yard when she went outside.

And it was frustrating.
Because the customer ended up taking a phone call halfway through our interaction.
Leaving me to play with her puppy as she was a bit too distracted trying to hear the voice on the other end to pay attention to her dog who kept trying to jump out of the cart to go to her.
Plus I hadn't finished trying to explain how doggie pens would work and what size they were and such.

Which when she finally got off the phone, I continued to help her.
Except she wasn't impressed with the pens.
Mostly because you couldn't stake them down.
And she was worried her puppy would knock it over.
>.>
Not sure...it was like a four pound puppy. But okay.

So I led her to the gates.
To which she was very specific. "It had to be eight feet wide outside" because that was the distance between the houses.
Unfortunately the gates don't go that....long. As they're meant for more normal doorway lengths.

-And at the same time there was another customer at those gates too who wanted help so I was multitasking between the two.

*exhales*
In any case. I was getting frustrated.
Mostly because I couldn't figure out how to explain things properly to the customer. Couldn't make the words come.
So I finally requested my manager to come help me.

As by this point my maybe 5 minute interaction had become a twenty-five minute ordeal and I just wanted to get back to finishing cleaning the reptile cages.
-It took me an hour to get back to them because of course we had a rush then.-

But the manager came just about the point I was trying to explain getting a tie-out for her puppy so the dog could be on a leash and the leash would be staked to the ground so the puppy couldn't go out into the front.
And he took over.

And I....I walked straight into another customer.
Who was desperately tryin to find some protection for her service dog.
As she'd come from out of town and hadn't even thought about the winter weather and was taken off guard by how cold it got this week and was worried ordering something online would take too long and she didn't want her dog to get too cold/wet/etc because the dog is often outside for long periods of time.

So she'd come in for a raincoat.
Which we have....seasonally.
Specifically she was looking for one that had a hood, and would protect both the back and the stomach of the dog.

We didn't have anything like that.
I had a handful of winter coats....without hoods.
And I had hooded raincoats....that didn't really cover the torso.

And she kept staring at me, expecting me to be able to wave my hand and give her the specific coat she was wanting.
Only I can't do that.

I think she ended up buying two coats and layering them.
Not sure.

But yah.
It's been just a frustrating day customer wise.

Culminating with a customer being unhappy that I told her she couldn't have her dog in the cat adoption area because not all cats like dogs and we don't want to stress them out.
And she was like "They love the dog!"
And I was like "It's policy still."
"Where?!"
And directed her to the sign we had on the glass that said "NO DOGS INSIDE"

She wasn't happy with me.
But hey.
I'm just trying to look out for the animals here.

*exhales*
I'm so ready for it to be the weekend.

Disco....The Dance?

So my manager was telling me and a coworker today, that all our disco stuff can be sold for 50% off because they want all that product to be out of the store.

And my coworker stopped him and was like "What's Disco?"

My manager and I both had a moment of....confusion.
Because we thought everyone knew what Disco meant here in the store.

As it's just short hand of "Discontinued."
As we often have products that the company has decided to no longer sell so it goes to "Reduced to Clear" because we're Discontinuing it to make room for new product coming into the store.

So it was weird...that my coworker didn't know what Disco meant....
Because that's the term we use. We don't say the full word.

*shakes head*
It was a bit more mind boggling...because this coworker has been working here for a couple of years now.
Like....how could you not have heard Disco before that point? *shakes head*
No idea.

But hey, now my coworker knows what it is. ^^;;

Build For Me

I was in the middle of helping a customer with fish when my head manager called me to the office over the radio. Stating only "I have a message for you."

Like. O.o
A message? Is this a good message or a bad message? Am I in trouble?
:S :S :S

Turns out.
A customer had called while I was busy helping with the fish.
Who wanted to see if we could do him a huge favor.

Where he wanted to buy a Leopard Gecko for his son for his birthday.
Only he wanted us to set up the cage for him and have the leopard gecko in there so he could basically walk into the store, grab the cage, pay for it all and walk out straight to the birthday party.

O.o
Normally we don't do that sort of thing.
But the manager was all for it.
So I called the customer back to find out what sort of cage he wanted and what type of leopard geckos and such....

Only the cage he wanted...we didn't currently have in stock. *exhales* It could have shown up on our truck that came in an hour before I was off....but at the point of the phone conversation, the truck hadn't shown up.

Still. I went through options.
And the customer thought he might go to a different Starsmet and pick up a tank there cus he knew it was in stock, then come down here to grab the leopard gecko.

Which at that point we had three in stock.

Only when I hung up there was a customer wanting one of them.

Meaning I had only two in stock.

And I didn't want the customer to come in to find out we had none because they sold.
-Because once a customer wants something suddenly everyone else wants it too.
*exhales*
So to prevent that possibility.
I put a reserved sign in the cage to keep the other two 'on hold' so the customer could come grab the cage.

He'd made it sound like he was going to be in before I got off.....
But I never saw him.

...So I have no idea if he came in after my shift or if he ended up finding a leopard gecko and cage elsewhere that he was more happy with....I'll guess we'll see when I come in tomorrow if I'm down to one leopard gecko or still have two.

Mast Ahoy

So we have this huge fish decoration in the store.

It's a sunken ship.
Split into two separate pieces.
With large masts with sales that are like two feet long.

And I have to say.
It's super cool!
All fancy with the yarn rigging and such.

I probably would have bought one myself....if I hadn't switched my fishtank from sunken ship to island castaway lol.

But it's....rather sad.
How delicate this ship is.
Because it's a $100 product.

And we got in two today on our truck....

And both were broken.
Masts snapped in half.
Even with the largest boxes ever and a thick padding of Styrofoam...

They still were broken when we opened them up.

And unluckily it was the same half of the ship that was broken in boxes.
So it wasn't like we could pull one half from one box and the other half from the other box and combine it to form one complete set.

Nope.
Same side broken = both useless.

*shakes head*
They either need to rethink the design of that ship....or package it different.
Because how they're doing it currently....obviously isn't working.

Way Up There

I had a gentleman come up to me wanting to know if I could tell him the price of some cat scratchers he wanted to look at as he couldn't see them.

So I asked him to show me them so I could price check them.
And he pointed up to our overstock section of products. -aka we have these steel shelves that we store extra product on that's out of reach of customers, but they can still see them up there as they line the walls of half the store.

So I simply looked at the type of product...and then took him around the corner to where we store the cat scratchers that size, and showed him the prices there.

*shakes head* Really...it would make more sense if the people in charge of organizing how product is placed on the shelves would be more thoughtful on keeping things together. That way people who see the big cat tree sized scratchers could also see the smaller ones nearby...
Instead of them being located on a completely different aisle out of sight of the other scratchers. *shakes head*

But at least I figured out the prices for him. ^^;;

New Things

The annoying thing about work.
Is that they always bring out really cool fish decorations just AFTER I spent a lot of money buying different ones!

Like where were you fish decorations when I HAD my sunken ship theme.
WHY bring out more cool sunken ships now that I've switched to a different theme??

>.>
It's just cruel.

Luckily I like my new theme.
So while the big cool decorations that we got into work today are Awesome to stare at.

They hold no temptation (yet) over me. ^^;;
You shall not win this round.

Staying Motivated

So last night was our Inventory.
And like three of the managers stayed up all night in order to make sure that the whole counting process went off well and such.

Which....apparently it didn't because they should have been done by 6am this morning (having started at 9pm last night)
And well....they were still there until like 830.
Though to be honest I think they were done at like 730 after going over discrepancies and the like.

However, the amusing thing of the morning, was listening to them while they were refacing the store.
-As when you do inventory you push product back on the shelf to show that there's nothing behind it, and everything from the back to the front of the shelf is the same.
So they went through pulling all the product back to the front of the shelves so customers would be able to reach them easier when they came into the store today.

But like they were trying to keep themselves motivated about the entire tedious process...and so commenced yelling "WAHOO!!" to each other throughout the store lol.
It was like an endless series of them.
"Wahoo"
"WAHOO!"
"WAAAHHOOOOO!!!"
lol normally it's just one manager that does the "wahoo" call.
So it was rather amusing to hear the other two doing it as well.

I really hope that they got some good rest once they got home. Poor tired Managers.

Attitude Shift

It was towards the end of my shift.
Where I was helping out a bit by going through boxes and putting stuff on the shelves.
But we'd reached the point where the items left in the boxes...were overstock.

So I told the manager in charge that we'd gone through all the boxes.
To which they were like "Great! Could you put the overstock in our bins?"

To which my verbal response (as I'd been asked over our radio system) was "UGGGGHHH!!!" With the sort of. "No, I don't wanna!" attitude. Before I clicked on my radio and responded in a more cheerful tone. "Yah! I can do that."

To which my coworker, who was nearby, kinda gave me a surprised look and laughed.
"That was so weird to see your true reaction." She said...or something along those lines.

Which considering it...
Yah I guess it would be kinda weird to see me be all >.< NO!!!!
And then turn around and be like ^^;; Sure!!

lol...to which I was like...it's called acting.
^^;;
Yah....
There are just times when I'd rather not help out. I have other tasks in mind that also need to be done, and there are occasions when the inability to go ahead and do those tasks is aggravating to me.

But thankfully I ended up getting both done. So yay for winning on both sides today.

Glitched

So Black Friday was basically a week ago.
And we had the problems of our online order system being on the fritz.

Where we could only intermittently get into the system to try and pick people's orders so they could come get it later without having to fight the crowds.

And occasionally the system would kick us out.
Or not allow us access.
Or freeze...

Which....we managed to pick all the orders in the end.
So it didn't seem like much of an issue once all was said and done. (besides how long it took)

But in the past couple of days I've gotten multiple calls from customers.
Who had 'ordered something online a week ago.' but had never received a confirmation email.

But when I would go into our system to see if their order had been picked.
It would be there under the "Come get me!" section.
I would then double check that this was actually true by going to go find the customer's order in person to make sure we actually had it set aside for them.
Which we did.

And because I've had to answer this type of phone call at least a half dozen times....
I'm pretty confident in saying that the system glitched in sending out confirmation emails.

Soooo hopefully we can get it all sorted out...and if people don't come get their stuff, call them so they can come get their stuff.....

If Memory Serves

So...I tend to have a knack for randomly remembering numbers and such.
Like if I count something, I tend to remember that number even though I don't usually need to remember it longer than about five seconds or so.
Still. if I count something Monday, I could still tell you on Thursday what it was.
"Oh yah, this cage had 11 blue parakeets in it. That hamster cage had three Russians in it, oh no we had only like 12 ghost shrimp Monday."

It was slightly different today.

So in the morning my department comes in and faces our section of the store before we go do anything else. Which usually ends up being me because I'm almost always the first one in my department.
It also happened to be a day where the stockers were working on moving product around, and stocking shelves because our truck had come in.

So I was in the middle of doing a task, when the stocking manager was like. "Hey Sarnic, which fish tanks are we missing?"

Which, he was referring to our Tank/Stand combos that are on the first aisle of my department.
Because they're big and heavy, I don't usually have to 'face' them because...well they don't move.
I mean, I do glance at that section, just to make sure other product hasn't ended up there. But it's not like I'm focused entirely on which tanks we do and don't have in stock there currently.

I wasn't even by the tank/stand combos when the manager asked me the question. Still I mentally conjured up a picture of what I recalled seeing this morning and told him. "We're missing the 60 gallon and the 65 gallon combos."

He blinked at me surprised. "Okay." And went to go check to see if any came in on the truck, while I wandered off to make sure I had remembered correctly.
I had.
Yay me. :D

Catnip On Hold?

I had a customer call on the phone today.
Who'd apparently been trying to get a hold of someone for 40 minutes.
-Sounds fake, but okay.-

Because she wanted to see if we had a certain product in stock.
Which I wasn't familiar with at all, but she said that the product said that they were carried by Starsmets, so after looking for it and not finding it, I asked a manager if we carried it and low and behold we did.
So I told her that we did.
And she asked if we could put it on hold for her.
Which I did.

And I told her to go to register one and tell them that she had items on hold when she came in and that they'd be in the cabinet.

-Really we need to have a word for the storage place where we put items that have been ordered online and are waiting to be picked up, or items that are on hold for a customer.

And the customer was like "Can you repeat that last bit? What about catnip?"

"No, Cabinet." I repeated. Only realizing as I said the word how similar it did sound to catnip.

So it wasn't surprising when she misheard it again.

Thankfully, I had a different similar word I could switch to. "Cabinet, you know the cupboard?"
"Ah!" That's when she got it thankfully lol. As I wouldn't have been able to come up with another similar word that quickly on the spot.

Product Complaints

So there's a frustrating thing at work.
Where a few months ago we were given 'orders' by higher ups to not write off anything in the store.
Meaning...if we had inventory discrepancies where our inventory says we have a product but there's none on the shelf....
We can't take the steps to fix it.

Which is frustrating because if our inventory thinks that we have a product when we don't...it means that we're not going to get anymore of that product in.
And if customers are trying to buy said product....and fail time and time again to find it when they come into the store....

Well it basically ends up frustrating for all sides.
As I really want to help customers find what they want.
And if I can't help them find the product.....
*exhales*

It's not like I can tell them. "Sorry, our inventory says we have three of these, but we last got them in in October so obviously they were either stolen or we didn't have them in the first place, but unfortunately I can't correct the inventory so we can get the product back on the shelf because we were told we can't make those adjustments, so until we're told we can fix our inventories again...you're out of luck."

Yah, pretty sure that wouldn't go over well.
*shakes head*
So I've resorted to saying something along the lines of: "It looks like we're temporary out of stock on these, and I don't know when our supplier will be able to send us more. There may be a shortage."

Still doesn't mean the customer is happy...but at least they have a reason as to why they can't find their item.

*exhales*
I had a customer today that wasn't happy. It was a 20 minute lecture of not happy.
Because for the past 3-4 months (so they said) this customer has come into the store to buy certain flavors of a certain brand of cat food.
And we used to always have that item in stock to where they could get four or five cases of the food easily.
But recently. Not so much. Customer came in for those cases....and left with one can.

To them, this was unacceptable. They easily spend $100 in the store on cat food when they come, and they don't want to see us losing business, but their cats are particularly picky and so will only eat certain flavors of certain brands... etc etc.

I can understand the frustration.
Honestly, I'm hoping that the customer is just having bad luck and is coming in after other customers have grabbed their flavors, leaving us constantly short stocked for this customer.
I'm hoping that it's not an inventory issue. Because if it is....there's not much I can do to fix it.
And with cat cans....inventory is easily to mess up.
If the cashiers accidentally only ring up one can when they should have rung up 24....it's easy to get off.

Hopefully we'll get the issues sorted out soon.
I mean, our inventory will become accurate in a month or so when we have to do our yearly 'inventory count' of everything in the store to start us back at 'square one' basically.
But I really want us to fix the issue before that point. So that I can make customers happy again, and not have to listen to complaints about it without being able to do anything.

Do You Have?

I'm probably too serious for my own good.
In that, when I'm in 'serious' mode, it's rather difficult for me to understand sarcasm/jokes for what they are. It takes me a second to switch gears and realize it.
Often I don't quite realize it until someone points it out.

In any case.
Today.

I had jumped onto the register to backup cashier.
And this customer came up saying that I'd rung her up for a harness at the wrong price.
That it had been reduced to clear.

So I went back there with her to double check.
Turns out the harness was in the wrong place. As the UPC didn't match it at all.
However, there were multiples of the harness in the spot.
Which means that it was a stocking error and not a customer putting something back in the wrong place.

So I called up the manager to get the price changed for the customer.
As I finished the transaction the manager disappeared back to the aisle the harness was on to double check things.
I followed as soon as I was done with customers at the register to make sure she ended up at the right spot.

She was pulling off the "reduced to clear" tags we had up.
As they were probably inaccurate.
Which left her with a handful of red square shaped tags.
She fanned them out and looked at me with a serious face and asked.
"Do you have a 6.27?"

Which is what we'd given the customer as the price for her harness.

Now automatically, my mind is in work mode right now.
So my first thoughts were. "Oh no! Did I remember the price wrong? Did we give the customer more money back than we should have?"
Before my mind clicked into second gear having finally processed the fanned out tags in her hands and instead said. "Go fish."

As that's what you say when you don't have a 6.27 in your hand. ;) haha.

Ah. Yah, I need to work on connecting the dots just a bit quicker when it comes to switching from work mode to fun mode.
